FAQ

Welcome to our FAQ centre. This guide is designed to help you navigate our self-service surfboard rental pods, from initial booking to any concerns you may have.

General Questions

What is Board Box?

Board Box is a network of smart, self-service rental pods providing high-performance surfboards directly at popular beach locations for instant access.

How does it work?

Simply browse available gear in our app, book your preferred board, and unlock the locker.

What boards are kept in our pods?

We stock a range of high-quality soft top boards to suit all beginners or just those that fancy some fun on a foamy.

What happens if I damage a board?

Usual wear and tear won't be charged. If equipment does get damaged it's important to report it in the app. The equipment is then locked out to prevent any further hires until it is exchanged.

Do you offer lessons?

Board Box doesn't offer lessons directly but we partner with local instructors who publish their availability and you can book lessons with them.

How long can I rent a board for?

There's no limit to how long you can rent a board.
Our rental structure is built with flexibility and freedom in mind. Simply rent a board in the app and you pay per minute.

Safety

Safety is our highest priority, here is how we've mitigated identified risks

ID Verification

Users must verify their ID before they can hire a board. This prevents anyone under 18 from hiring equipment and reduces the risk of tampering.

Automatic Weather Alert

Board Box continuously monitors weather conditions. If a weather warning is issued, the app will notify all users and the pod will switch to a return‑only mode, meaning no new boards can be hired.

Defect Reporting

Users can report defects with equipment. When a defect is reported, that locker is locked out until the issue is resolved. Normal wear and tear is not charged for. Users must also upload photos of the gear when returning it.

In-App Tutorials

Access tutorials on rip currents, RNLI flags, board handling, and surf etiquette directly in the app. Learn how to read water conditions and wipe out safely before hitting the waves.

Specific Spot Guides

The app provides detailed information about risks at your chosen location, including live swell, wind, and tide data. You’ll also find localised water‑quality information and a general conditions rating for every spot.

Instructors

For users who don’t yet feel fully confident going out alone, Board Box offers the option to book a lesson with a local instructor. Instructors must validate their certification and hold their own public liability insurance.
